Basic Marble Information

Etymology

The word Marble is derived from the Greek word Marmaros which means “shining stone” This is probably a reference to the translucent property of pure white marble which seams to make it glow when light is shone upon it.

Formation

Marble is a type of metamorphic rock.

Marble starts off as either a Limestone or Dolostone, with a lot of the mineral Calcite in it. When this is exposed to the right amount of heat and pressure, the material changes into marble.

This heat or pressure causes a process known as recrystallization. That is where the tiny individual grains that make up the original stone are changed, in this case into larger grains.

The result is that the original stone is transformed, into marble.

Art

Marble has a long tradition of being used in sculpture. This is because of several reasons.

Marble is a relatively soft natural stone, making it easy to carve.

Marble formed from pure calcite can sometimes be translucent, and light can penetrate the stone slightly. This makes sculptures seam to glow when illumination is shone on them.

Unlike some stones, whose minerals form in layers, marble’s inherent grains don’t tend to arrange themselves in straight lines. When a stone which is formed in layers is chiseled, large chunks tend to break off at random, making it difficult to control what the final statue will look like. The individual grains in marble however do not form in lines and therefore you can chisel off as much or as little as you like.

Architecture

Marble is a very popular building material used in architecture and design.

Marble can be obtained in almost any shape, giant blocks, slabs, or raw chunks.

The most popular shape for marble is in tile form.

Tiles can range from 4″ – 24″ square, although larger tiles tend to be less stable and more apt to crack.

Other Uses

Ground up into a fine powder, marble is a component material used in some glues and mortars, as well as toothpaste and various plastics

Meaning

Marble tends to be considered an elegant material. It is also tied closely to the classical Greek and Roman periods. A relatively expensive, and difficult to maintain stone, it is most often used in delicate and upscale applications

Care and Maintenance

Marble has tiny pores in its surface, which are too small to see with the bear eye, but which are large enough to soak up moisture. Sometimes liquid, especially colorful liquids such as fruit juices can soak into the pores in the marble, permanently discoloring it.

To prevent this a below surface sealer can be applied which will clog the pores making it impossible for moisture to penetrate it.

A chemical barrier can also be applied to marble which will form an invisible layer over its surface, protecting it further.

Faux Painting – How To Earn Extra Income Faux Finishing On The Side

As a graphic artist by trade, I never dreamed that I would be in the business of Faux Painting or Decorative Art. The thought never crossed my mind, partly because I was unaware of how popular this beautiful form of art was becoming.

Ten years ago there was only limited information on the various faux painting techniques. Most referred to faux finishing as “sponging” or “glazing”. In essence, the term was misused and for the most part, still is. I am referring to the fact that “FAUX” means “FAKE”, therefore, to faux paint a wall means to paint it in a way that makes the wall resemble a specific surface other than just a plain wall, such as “marble”, “wood”, etc. The sponges or glazes are just tools to achieve a certain effect on the wall.

I’ve read comments on faux painting message boards indicating the perturbation of professional faux finishers when uninformed clients refer to any type of decorative painting (besides murals) as “fauxing”. It used to bother me, too, yet through the years I’ve learned to accept the fact that those unfamiliar with the details of faux painting could care less about the terminology and more about the beauty of decorative painting instead.

So although you have not been professionally faux painting walls, if you learn how to achieve a few easy faux finishing techniques, you can offer your services to friends and family and they won’t care if you’re uninformed with the terms. As long as you can make their walls look beautiful, you can make some extra income on the side. Who knows – maybe you’ll end up with your own faux painting business like I did. Start off by painting your own walls, then invite others to see your work. If they ask how much would you charge to faux paint their walls, give them a relatively low price since you are just starting out and use it as practice.

If you ever plan to start your own faux painting business, you can get quite a few “practices” in and you can begin gathering photos for your portfolio. That’s how my journey began.

The wonderful thing about embarking on your own journey into the beautiful art of decorative painting today is that there are a lot more faux painting tools, classes, and books available than there was when I started out ten years ago. My suggestion is to start out with the simple faux finishes such as sponging and color blending. There are many textured faux finishes that you can learn but they are time consuming and the materials can be quite expensive. After faux painting literally hundreds of walls, I can tell you honestly that 90% of my clients still choose “color blending” or “color washing”, including the “Old World Parchment” look. Why, because some of the textured finishes are too “busy looking” and the cost for faux painting with texture is nearly double than what it is for non-textured faux finishes. Besides, once you get your foot into the door, then you can offer them.

Starting your own business.

As in any area of business, learning from other professionals is always your best bet to get a jump start to succeed. If you are considering starting a faux finishing or decorative painting business, I highly recommend reading books on how to acquire a business license, keeping your books and other important information you need to know. There are some great e-books that are available online. Do a search for them. If you would like to visit my website, I have one that I recommend.

Wood Console Tables – Distressing Gives Character

When decorating a home there is always a balance to be reached while choosing the right furniture. You want something that suits the style you are trying to create in your home, but you also need to make sure it is a functional piece of furniture that will fulfill any needs you may have in your home.

When you are creating a country theme to your home you will want to remove as many of the modern day items in the home as you can. How believable is an old country living room that has remote controls sitting all over the place? This does not mean you are not going to use any of these items; you just want a way to keep them out of the way, and from ruining the feel of the space.

This is where wood console tables end up being a godsend. Because wood console tables are not only tables to put the things on that can be seen in a home, but are generally made with drawers and shelves where you can tuck away things you would rather not have seen.

Sometimes you can luck out and find a perfect old country console table, but if you can’t or you don’t have the budget for one that has been distressed and given a country feel, it’s not too hard to take a plain console table and help it go country.

Start with unfinished wood console tables or one that you can take the current paint off of. If the table has any sort of finish, you will need to use a stripping agent to remove that before moving forward with this project.

Next you need to decide that final look you want for your table.

Cracking

One way to make wood console tables look old is to give them a cracked finish. Think about the look of an old table pulled out of a farm house after generations. The paint is starting to crack and break away from the surface. It used to be it took a lot of work to create this look, but not anymore. There are ‘crackle paints’ or crackle additives to add to paint that will make this finish happen very easily. Often all you have to do is apply 1-2 coats and you will have created an antique look with ease.

Distressed Painting

Another option is to create a distressed paint look on your wood console tables for added character. This is going to take a little more work and a few more supplies. You will need 1-2 colors of paint, a hammer, file, sandpaper and patience. First you need to have an unfinished table. If your table already is, great; if not, you need to strip it down before beginning.

Next, beat up the table. Yes, you read that right. There is no old country table that is in perfect condition, which means you need to use the file or sandpaper to rough up the edges. If you want it to look well used you can use the hammer to make a few dings.

If you are using one color of paint, you may want to water it down to create a more ‘whitewashed’ look while painting.

If you have two colors, you may instead want to put a coat of one color on and while it is still damp, drag the second color over the top of it. The resulting striped pattern will look as if this piece has been painted over itself over the years, a very handed-down look.

Faux Marble

Faux or false marble is a product that simulates the appearance of natural marble. Creating faux marble is an intricate process, since it must replicate the essentially chaotic appearance of real marble – its texture and grain. This is usually achieved by combining several layers of paint.

Faux marble is a cheap alternative to the real kind, since it can imitate the noblest of finishes effectively for a fraction of the cost. It is also available as a finished product, but the do-it-yourself or custom-made options are usually far more rewarding.

The most effective way of creating a faux marble effect is by applying alternating layers of carefully selected paint and tinted glaze on a white or otherwise lightly colored baseboard; that way the natural veins and grain of marble are simulated. The process, also known as ‘marbleizing’, can be used on walls and furniture. Though it is quite time-consuming, the effect can be quite fabulous and well worth the time and effort.

To achieve a convincing marble effect, one must choose a color scheme that closely imitates the natural version. The most effective shade combinations are gray/white with dark gray/black streaks, pink with peach streaks and eggshell or off-white with yellow/gray and green streaks. These are the usual color combinations of natural marble.

The different layers of paint are glazed over at regular intervals till the desired effect emerges. There are many variations of the process. Some use feathers for achieving a natural streaking effect, some employ candle wax. This is a creative process – have fun!

Faux marble can be bought or made at home; either way, it will add a sophisticated, colorful element to your home.

How To Antique Your Kitchen Cabinets

If you need new cabinets but can’t afford them, you might try some do it yourself antiquing. Antiquing your kitchen cabinets can revitalize old tired cabinetry and add warmth and character to the room. Antiqued cabinets go with a wide range of decorating styles, from country, to Victorian to Tuscan to French.

Antiqued cabinets will give your kitchen a warm lived in look as well as make the room feel more relaxed and comfortable. There are 2 basic methods you can use to antique your kitchen cabinets – staining and distressing. You can use them alone, or combine them for some old world charm in your kitchen

Antiquing Your Cabinets With Stain

This method of antiquing kitchen cabinets works best on cabinets that are painted a light color or have a light stain.
You will need some dark stain, a brush or sponge and lots of paper towels. Achieving an antique look is easy but you might want to try it in an area that isn’t so noticeable or practice on something else until you get the hang of it and develop a technique.

To antique stain your cabinets, simply apply a light layer of the stain on one section of the cabinet and wipe off to the desired level of “antiqueness”. Repeat all along the cabinet until you are done! You’ll want to make it look natural, so concentrate more stain on the areas that would get the most wear like around the edges and handles.

Distressing Your Kitchen Cabinets

This method of antiquing kitchen cabinets works only on painted cabinets. It is called distressing because it simulates the wear that an old piece of cabinetry would endure after hundreds of years of use. Some people use chains and hammers when distressing furniture, but I think a little bit of sandpaper is enough for cabinets.

The object is to sand off the finish on the edges and worn areas. Therefore, you would take a medium grit paper and sand at the door and drawer edges to reveal just a thin layer of the wood underneath. It looks best when the color underneath is a bit darker or if the cabinets are dark then it looks best if the color revealed is lighter. Personally, I prefer to stick to the edges, but you can sand a bit off in the middle if you want an overall worn look.

Some other methods of antiquing kitchen cabinets include crackle painting and faux painting.

Crackle painting is done with 2 types of paint – the bottom layer is painted on and the crackle medium is brushed on top which causes the layer underneath to crackle. I have tried this method many times and have never been really satisfied with the results. If you really like this look, I suggest you practice, practice, practice on something else before you attempt to crackle your cabinets.

Faux painting can be a very nice way of antiquing your cabinets. You can probably find a local artist that will do
this for a reasonable price – they can add depth to the cabinet as well as some nice artistry!

Other ways to add interest to your cabinets include changing the knobs and hardware and adding
molding, legs and trimwork.

Creating Tuscan Interior Design Style In Your Home

One of the most popular trends in home decorating is Tuscan interior design. Exotic European decor spices up a space that was previously boring. Elements used in Tuscan interior design included decorative moldings, antique furniture, and many decorative fixtures. An antique or vintage look is common, as well as faux architectural elements such as moldings, pillars, and ceiling cutouts. Faux finishes such as marble are especially popular in creating the Tuscan look.

Tuscan interior design can add warmth and character to a room by making it look aged and lived in. The Tuscan style often includes rustic elements such as cracked plaster and stucco. A wide variety of wall washing and faux finish techniques are employed, along with a rich palette tending towards the warm end of the spectrum. Brown, gold, rich reds, terra cotta and yellow are common. Olive greens and deep blues can be used for accent tones.

Texture is an important aspect of Tuscan interior design. The appearance of many layers of paint, cracked stucco or marble walls, and worn furniture are used to add an Old World charm to the room. Wood grain and texture are highlighted, as well as any cracks or crevices. Irregularity is used to add interest and warmth.

The feel of Tuscany can be used even in small spaces, but it is important to be careful not to make the area feel cluttered. Light, brilliant yellows and vibrant colors help to enlarge the room when accented with light colors. Storage can be incorporated into furniture to keep the amount of clutter in the room low. Scrap woods, vintage paintings and photographs, and accent pillows in luxurious fabrics can also help to fill a room with Old World flavor. Wrought iron fixtures, tile, and wood surfaces all add to the feel of Tuscan interior design.

Tuscan interior design can be accomplished on a very low budget. For those who know how to shop, items with the appropriate flavor can be acquired for low prices at vintage stores and art sales. While it is important that items have the same general feel, they do not have to match. A certain quirky individuality is desirable. Likewise, scrapes and dings in furniture add to their character in Tuscan interior design. Paired carefully with the right colors and other furnishings, crevices and signs of wear becoming charming. Tuscan interior design makes use of brilliant colors without feeling overwhelming. A sunny atmosphere evoking the warmth of the Mediterranean can revitalize any room.
